Researcher in Applied Mineralogy

About the position and project

The Natural History Museum (NHM) at the University of Oslo invites applications for a two-year, full-time position as a Researcher in applied mineralogy and industrial mineral exploration. The position will be based in the Department of Research and Collections, within the Norwegian Centre for Mineralogy Research Group. The position is part of the innovation industry-research project “PureQ – The Future of the High-Purity Quartz Value Chain for Improved Yield, Quality and Sustainability”, funded by the Research Council of Norway.

The successful and highly motivated candidate will have a strong publication record and demonstrated experience with modern, advanced microanalytical techniques for mineral characterisation, particularly of quartz. Relevant expertise includes crystal chemistry and microtextural characterisation. Experience in mineral exploration, especially geochemical exploration and drill-core logging, is also desirable.

Qualifications requirements

Required qualifications: • A PhD in geology or mineralogy • Demonstrated ability to conduct elemental microanalysis using LA-ICP-MS, including data processing and interpretation • A recent publication record relevant to the subject area of the position • A strong upward academic trajectory

The successful candidate must demonstrate mastery of English as working language. Proficiency in Norwegian is an advantage.

Desirable qualifications: • Familiarity with a range of microanalytical and spectrometric techniques used for mineral analysis besides LA-ICP-MS, such as SEM, EPMA, and CL

• Salary in position as Researcher (position code 1109) in salary range NOK from 620 000 to 720 000, depending on competence and experience. From the salary, 2 percent is deducted in statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund.
